Rustic Home Exterior Renovation

The exterior of this client’s 1980s home needed some curb appeal, and we were happy to deliver! With plenty of space to pull up a chair and take in the view of their sprawling property, this rustic exterior renovation was exactly what the homeowner envisioned. The reclaimed timber gable truss creates a gorgeous focal point and has local ties; the Douglas Fir beams came from the Old West Publishing building in downtown St. Paul.

Custom Outdoor Sport Court in Highland Park

The Great Northern Builders team has been lucky enough to work with many great clients over the years. We’re always excited when our long-time clients reach out with new project ideas. This garage teardown and rebuild in Highland Park, Minnesota, is no exception — especially because it had a fun twist!

Our team has helped this family with an array of interior and exterior renovation projects in the past. Some of these projects include a new main level addition, kitchen remodel, new windows and siding, a basement remodel, and bathroom remodels. The owners have been so great to work with, and we were thrilled when they contacted us about this new project! In addition to tearing down their existing garage and rebuilding, they wanted to add an attached outdoor sport court.

Both the homeowners and our team couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out! The new sport court spans 22 x 38 feet with custom rebound netting on three sides. The fourth side of the court butts up to the garage and features a custom-built rebound wall. The wall will soon feature custom decals and graphics, which will pair nicely with the court’s specially-licensed MN United banners.

Remodeling Q&A: Frequently Asked Questions

As people spend more time at home in 2020, remodeling has become more popular than ever right now. If you’re considering remodeling, you might be wondering, is it a good time to start a project?

Our short answer: yes! Home financing rates are at an all-time low; it’s a great time to invest in your home. From offices to play spaces to workout rooms to areas for virtual schooling, there are countless ways to make your home work better for you!

To help demystify the process, we’re answering our most common client remodeling questions below. Want to learn more about renovating with our team? We’d love to chat!

Question 1: How long will my project take?
Answer: On average, after the design and permitting phase is complete, bathroom remodels take between 4-8 weeks, and kitchen construction typically lasts from 10-12 weeks. Please keep in mind, project length is also based on material availability.

Question 2: How soon can you start my remodel?
Answer: The timing of your specific remodel all depends on the design process and permitting approval. Once we’ve dug in and started planning, then we can give you an informed, tentative project timeline!

Question 3: I’m ready to go; what’s the next step?
Answer: If you’re ready to get started, then get in touch with us ASAP. The influx of demand caused by COVID has slowed down the remodeling process, and many needed products (such as windows and siding) are on backorder right now. Give yourself enough time to plan your project and reach out to us sooner rather than later!

Modern Kitchen Remodel in Inver Grove Heights

WhiteKitchenRemodel (10)

There’s nothing like being stuck inside for weeks on end to make you realize what your home is lacking. For these homeowners in Inver Grove Heights, it was an updated, functional kitchen. Originally built in 1957, the room had been updated once before, and had the 90s look to prove it! (Think soffits above the cabinets, laminate countertops, and a mundane 12×12 floor tiles.) These clients wanted to work with a design-build firm that could fulfill their need for more storage and functionality without sacrificing style.

The existing kitchen layout was rather small, so we had to get creative when it came to design. To increase the square footage, we borrowed space from the master bedroom closet that backed up to the kitchen, which we converted into a pantry. This minor change had a huge impact and gave the homeowners some much-needed storage! The pantry can be easily accessed by an eye-catching sliding barn door purchased from Artisan Hardware.

Once the project was underway, the homeowners also decided to remove a knee-high wall, replacing it with an open decorative railing on the lower level staircase. The open railing helped make the space feel larger while adding another decorative element.

The new layout features custom Dura Supreme cabinetry topped with natural Quartzite countertops. In addition to under cabinet lighting, we added dimmable lights throughout the room. When it came to plumbing fixtures, no expense was spared! From the fire clay farmhouse sink to the pot filler over the stove, each piece perfectly complements the other. Tying the entire home together is new flooring throughout the main level, which matches the engineered hickory hardwood in the kitchen.

We had so much fun helping these homeowners reimagine their kitchen, and the result is stunning! Want to see more of this gorgeous transformation? You’re in luck! Scroll below for a look inside, and be sure to get in touch with our team to discuss your own remodeling project!

Rustic Exterior Renovation in Inver Grove Heights

Rustic Exterior Remodel

Spring is here to stay in the Twin Cities, and front porch season has arrived along with it! Today, we’re featuring a stunning rustic exterior renovation in Inver Grove Heights.

This client’s late 80’s home was in desperate need of some curb appeal. The dated front exterior was wrapped in the original rough-sawn cedar lap siding, which had endured years of abuse from weather and the elements.

Aside from being dated, the porch was also too cramped for the homeowners to enjoy. They wanted more space to pull up a chair and take in the beautiful view of their sprawling property. Our owner, Chris Biljan, carefully planned a new design that incorporated a more extensive, open-air porch with an expanded roofline and front walk approach.

To create a low maintenance space to enjoy for years to come, we used a mix of natural and easy to care for products. Bonus? These materials also provide a lot of design character!

The focal point of this stunning porch is the reclaimed timber gable truss. The towering Douglas Fir beams were pulled from the Old West Publishing building in downtown St Paul. Not only did the material make an incredible addition to the project, but it’s sure to be a conversation piece for another one-hundred years! Engineered from original sketches and hand-hewn individually before being shipped to the site, the 1,500-pound truss was assembled on-site and set into a place with a crane.

To finish the porch, Trex decking was installed to provide a low maintenance and durable surface. New nickel-gaped, rough-sawn pine was added to the ceiling vault and stained to appear weathered. Lighting was also installed throughout the porch and surrounding landscape to give a sense of warmth and, of course, provide needed illumination. LP Smart siding, reclaimed white oak details, and new faux wood garage doors finish off the front of this beautiful home.

2020 Spring Remodelers Showcase

Updated 3/18/2020: In light of COVID-19, the Spring Remodelers Showcase has been canceled. Please enjoy the images below (plus more to come)!

Spring is making its annual appearance, and with it, comes the 2020 Spring Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase! While we’re thrilled about the warmer weather’s early arrival this year, we’re even more excited to show off this stunning Woodbury, Minnesota remodel!

2020 Spring Remodelers Showcase
#48 – 6976 Wyndham Way, WoodburyMN 55125

At Great Northern Builders, we believe the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where families come together to gather, make memories, and share their days. To make this Woodbury home’s kitchen and main level more functional, we began by removing a wall to create an open floor plan.

In the kitchen, we added a custom 8-foot island and cabinetry, both of which feature specialty storage. Next, a breakfast/coffee bar adds an extra level of functionality and charm to the space. The final touches to make the kitchen pop were the unique backsplash and gorgeous quartz countertops.

To tie the kitchen’s design to the rest of the main level, we installed new luxury vinyl plank flooring, lighting, and an Anderson Windows patio door. From the stunning design details to the exceptional craftsmanship, this home is a must-see during the Parade of Homes Remodelers Showcase!

Over the years, we’ve worked on many different commercial projects, including assisted living and senior centers, hotels, multi-family housing, office space, dental clinics, bars, and restaurants – we’ve even worked on a sorority house!

As it is with residential remodeling, every commercial project has a different scope of work. Whether it’s an insurance restoration or a standard build/remodel, each poses a unique set of expectations and challenges. That being said, some of the commercial services we provide include the following:

  • Remodeling
  • Full buildouts with all-custom design
  • Insurance restoration due to mold, fire, water, or storm damage
  • Landscaping/curb and parking lot repair/striping
  • New builds and additions
  • Door and hardware replacement

  • Architectural and interior design

Great Northern Builders Specializes in All Types & Sizes of Commercial Projects

We specialize in “light commercial projects,” so don’t look to us to build your next skyscraper. Our commercial services include buildouts, remodeling, and small new construction along the lines of retail, hospitality, multi-family housing, etc. We cover anything from a simple new entry door unit on an existing building to a million-dollar insurance loss that needs special attention. Regardless of size, we understand how important it is to keep an existing business up-and-running throughout the entire project or complete a new build promptly. We always tell our clients that we get it because we are a small business too.

What We Love About Commercial Construction and Remodeling

Some of our favorite parts of working on commercial construction and remodeling projects are the versatility that comes with each. There is often so much freedom within each space, which lets us get creative in ways that don’t work for residential projects. It’s also great knowing that so many people get to see and experience our work in a commercial setting. There’s another rewarding aspect of the commercial side of work as well. In some situations, we work with residents living in a senior living home or multi-family housing that are displaced to property damages. Being able to put their homes back together even better than before is an amazing feeling!

Common Challenges of Commercial Projects

Commercial construction and remodeling can be very challenging. Commercial projects are entirely different than residential projects. There are tight timelines, budgets, and variables—like the weather—that impact each job. Also, some elements don’t follow the typical residential code, such as design, building codes, and ADA compliance. With so many things to balance, being well-versed and knowledgeable about the commercial process and codes is a must.

Are you interested in seeing our commercial services in action? Our project gallery is chock-full of some great projects. To learn more about our commercial construction and remodeling services, get in touch with our team. In the meantime, scroll below for a peek at some of our latest commercial projects.

Six 2020 Design Trends

As 2020 begins, the design industry is cozying up to new trends. We asked our talented designer, Tracy Donlan, for her perspective on what styles will be popular in the coming year. Read on below to see what she had to say!

1. Color and Comfort
Painted cabinetry is still the most common request for kitchens and bathrooms, with white being the strong leader.  However, we direct our clients to a softer, warmer version – a linen or creamy white – especially with our long Minnesota winters, a true white can feel harsh and cold come February.

2. Bold Tones
Color usage is becoming deeper and softer.  Jewel-toned dusky sapphires, dark teals, terra cotta, and rich jade are balanced against soft sunset blushes and warm taupe.  Greys are still popular but trending from the cooler to a warmer undertone giving a sense of serenity and calm.

3. Touches of Warmth
Adding touches of warmth through natural materials is gaining even more prominence.  Whether wood, rattan, or burlap, the inviting quality of natural materials makes a room feel more livable.  These finishes are moving away from being as rustic, with less rough-hewn appearance and a more touchable and sophisticated appeal.

4. Playing with Texture
Combining multiple textures can also add interest and elevate a design.  The richness of velvet juxtaposed with burlap can lead to unexpected elegance. Whether it’s something simple as a table setting or in a larger format such as pillows on a sofa.  Performance textiles are allowing more variety in color and texture to be used on furnishings without the worry of maintenance and livability.

5. Kitchen Zones
Bringing this theory into kitchen design, more kitchens are utilizing multiple cabinetry finishes.  Combining painted and stained cabinetry or multiple colors can designate different zones, add interest, and animate a kitchen.  Special attention can be brought to unique features within the room by highlighting them with the finishes selected.

6. Quartz Countertops
Quartz countertops are the surface of choice for many homeowners.  Allowing for less maintenance than natural stone, the aesthetic of quartz can mimic marble or granite.  Often an island or specialty area of the kitchen is made more dramatic through a stunning countertop while utilizing a more subtle pattern for the perimeter spaces.

Grand Opening of the Newly Remodeled Lambda Delta Phi Sorority House

Lambda Delta Phi Sorority Grand Opening Great Northern Builders

In September, we had the honor of attending the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Lambda Delta Phi sorority. Taking part in this event was a special moment for our team. Over the course of a year-and-a-half, Great Northern Builders had the pleasure of working with the ladies of Lambda Delta Phi to remodel their existing sorority house.

Our first meeting began as just an estimate to inspect some failing stucco on the front and side of the property. However, what started as a straightforward project snowballed pretty quickly! That estimate turned into a full-scale remodel, which is the largest remodel we have tackled to date!

Although we preserved as much of the original structure as possible, this remodel called for demolishing a large part of the house. Our team collaborated with Lambda Delta Phi to create a beautiful design that not only housed more residents but also made the structure safer. We added much-needed fire suppression systems, full monitoring services, and ADA compliant access to the home, bathrooms, and living quarters. Our team also increased the property’s energy efficiency by installing new windows and doors throughout the home, as well as all-new closed-cell spray foam insulation.

Great Northern Builders is proud to play a pivotal role in creating this amazing space for generations of sorority sisters to come. This was such a rewarding project, and it was great getting to know so many of the wonderful people involved. Scroll below for a peek at the grand opening event!

Happy 10 Year Anniversary Great Northern Builders

Great Northern Builders was founded 10 years ago this August! To celebrate, we’ll be sharing stories, photos, and trips down memory lane all month long on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. But first, we’d like to say thank you to all of our clients and supporters who’ve kept us busy over the last decade; there would be no business without you!

Have you ever wondered how we got our start? Here’s the story!

Our founder, Chris, was born into the construction industry. His grandfather started a custom millwork company in the early 1970s. When he passed away, Chris’ father and uncles stepped in to take over the business and support the family.

Chris started GNB in 2009 and is proud, not only of the successful business it has become but also of the talented professionals who have joined his team. The company is still steeped in tradition, recently purchasing the exact same building his grandfather built and used for his business over 40 years ago!

The team behind the business.

Our hard-working talented team is what makes our business so great! Without them, we wouldn’t be the company we are today. Meet our team members here.

5 Kitchen Remodeling Designs We Love

At Great Northern Builders, we love helping our clients breathe new life into their outdated kitchen by creating a beautiful and functional design. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working on many kitchen remodels. While we try not to play favorites, there are some kitchen remodeling designs we get excited about time and time again. So, we thought we’d share five of our favorite kitchen design elements. Check them out below!

Timeless Design Details

rustic meets modern timeless kitchen design

When planning your kitchen remodeling design, it goes without saying you want it to last for as long as possible. After all, remodeling requires a big investment! There’s nothing as disheartening to find your design outdated just a few years down the road. With that in mind, you can’t go wrong with a kitchen featuring timeless design details! Think bright, white cabinets and classic elements like subway tile and elegant quartz countertops.

Two-Tone Cabinetry

Is an all-white kitchen not quite your speed? Two-tone cabinetry may be the perfect solution. We’ve been seeing more and more homeowners utilizing this design in their kitchen remodel lately. And, we can see why! A two-tone design is a great way to add dimension and visual interest to your kitchen. Opting for lower cabinets in a darker hue adds balance while the addition of lighter cabinets on top draws the eye upward. This trend can be customized according to your preference, too. Whether you create a two-tone effect with just your island cabinet or you want to mix and match painted and stained cabinets, the choice is yours!

Natural Wood Accents

A kitchen remodeling design we can totally get behind? Natural wood accents! Adding wood elements to your design not only looks beautiful but creates warmth. There are many different options for incorporating wood into your design, too. One of our favorite ways? Wrapping the kitchen island in wood planks. From shiplap to rough-sawn planks to reclaimed wood, the result is sure to wow! Some other options include open wood shelving, exposed ceiling beams, butcher block counters, and statement walls.

Beverage Stations

It may be small but what a beverage station lacks in size, it makes up for in function. This versatile space can be used as a coffee nook or a mini-bar, depending on your preferences. The countertop offers a convenient place to house your coffee maker, while the built-in cabinets can hold anything from coffee mugs to wine glasses to small appliances. Below the cabinets, a beverage fridge will keep drinks perfectly chilled while freeing up valuable real estate in the fridge. If you love to entertain, adding a beverage station to your kitchen remodeling design is a must! Having a designated area for drinks makes it easy for guests to help themselves to a beverage during a get-together.

Eye-catching range hoods are the perfect way to make a statement in your kitchen remodeling design. What’s really wonderful about this trend is the many different options to choose from. Range hoods can be found in a variety of materials and shapes, so finding one that complements your kitchen design is a breeze. To really help this focal point pop, consider adding a tile feature in between the range hood and the stove top like the kitchen pictured above.
