Celebrating 12 Years in Business!

The GNB team is humbled and proud to celebrate 12 years in business this month! Each time we pass a significant company milestone, we cannot help but reflect on how fortunate we are to do this work we love every day.

Did you know GNB’s founder, Chris, was raised in the building and construction industry? His grandfather started a custom millwork company in the early 1970s. Eventually, Chris’ father and uncles took over the family business themselves.

In 2009, Chris established Great Northern Builders. He is honored to further his family’s business tradition and collaborate with so many talented and hard-working professionals. GNB will always be a family business legacy; to this day, many of his brothers and other family members still work for the company.

Thank you to our clients, trade-partners, families, and friends who continue to support us year after year – we are grateful for each of you. We hope to continue serving you all for many years to come!

Remodeling Vs. Building: What are the Benefits?

Our homes worked hard for us this past year. During the height of the pandemic, most of us were doing everything from schooling to working to playing to exercising at home. It’s no wonder so many homeowners are interested in remodeling after spending all that time cooped up inside!

As the costs of building, material shortages, labor demands, and rising prices are on everyone’s mind, how do you know what move is right for your home and your finances? Today, we’re going to weigh out the benefits of remodeling vs. building a new home. Keep reading for the four reasons why we think remodeling is the better option!

  1. Resale Value Remains High
As we face a low inventory of available homes, the value of housing continues to rise. Whether you decide to move or build from the ground up, you will face significant costs. However, remodeling means saving yourself the trouble of navigating this wild market! Skip the stress of moving, and reinvest that money in your current home. It will pay off when you are ready to sell your home further down the road!
  2. Low Interest Rates
Another advantage to staying put and remodeling? Interest rates are historically low right now. From taking out a personal loan to home equity loans to home equity lines of credit, there are plenty of financing options to choose from! Get in touch with your lender to learn more about your local resources.
  3. Bigger Builders Can Limit Options
When working with a big builder, there’s often a big difference between fully and semi-custom homes. Unless your budget allows for a completely custom home, you may find your material and finish options fairly limited and lower in quality. Remodeling allows you to select whichever products and materials you love instead of starting over with builder-grade finishes.
  4. Shortened Timeline
There is no denying that planning and executing a remodel takes far less time than building an entirely new home. Instead of waiting months or up to a year to get into a new home, you could spend half that time perfecting the one you already own! Not to mention, duking it out in this competitive housing market could mean making countless offers over asking price before you’re lucky enough to succeed.
  5. More Cost Effective
When you get down to it, remodeling is more cost effective than starting from scratch. There is simply no comparison between building a new home versus working within your original footprint or adding a small addition. Material prices may be higher than usual, but remodeling still requires less of them than creating an entirely new home!

It’s so fun to collaborate with clients who make distinctive design choices, and this kitchen is absolutely unique. The room strikes a delicate balance between classic elements and playful surprises.

There are so many features and finishes we love throughout the space, but the star of this kitchen is clearly the center statement light. Floating above the soft blue island, the ethereal beaded strands sparkle and shine while bringing a touch of glamor to everyday life. The new dining room light also elevates the space with its diamond-style finish. Both lights are truly the jewelry of each room!

Form Meets Function: Our Four Favorite Bathroom Trends

Our most successful client bathroom remodels are often a mix of good organization, fun trends, and smart design. Unlike some rooms, your bathroom gets used every single day. This busy space needs not just to be beautiful but practical too!

We love creating bathroom designs that are equally efficient and interesting and have remodeled countless spaces for our clients over the years. Scroll below to explore a few of our favorite bathrooms and four fun trends!

Stunning Showers
Showers are the perfect place to start the morning fresh or wash away a stressful day. Never underestimate the value of a really nice shower! They’re an excellent place to invest your resources because showers get used so frequently.

Bold Powder Rooms
Powder rooms are an ideal opportunity to make a statement! A smaller space like this allows for more character and fun that could be overwhelming in a larger space. Chose a vibrant countertop or a strong wallpaper to add a playful element to a room that’s often overlooked!

Playful Tile
One of our favorite ways to create a beautiful bathroom is by playing with tile. From bold patterns to bright colors to unique shapes, tile lends itself well to expressing your distinct design personality!

All-Out Organization
The unsung hero in any home’s design: storage! Organized, well-planned storage is the secret weapon that makes any bathroom look beautiful and feel peaceful. There are countless ways to customize your bathroom around your lifestyle and storage needs.

Ready to freshen up your bathroom’s style? Give us call – we’d love to help!

5 Home Remodeling Trends to Watch for in 2021

After a challenging year, it’s safe to say we’re all happy to say goodbye to 2020. While we may only be a few weeks into the brand-new year, our team has already started to see some new home remodeling trends emerge for 2021. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of the trends we can’t wait to help our clients make their own this year. Check them out below!

Stunningly Scandinavian

Founded in the belief that there’s beauty in simplicity, Scandinavian design embodies a sense of minimalism and functionality. But simple doesn’t mean boring! The Scandinavian home remodeling trend is sure to add a touch of elegance to any home with creative storage solutions, neutral accents, and hygge-inspired textiles.

Rustic Meets Industrial

Move over Chip and Jo; today’s homeowners are leaning away from the well-loved farmhouse style and toward a rustic industrial vibe. While farmhouse design isn’t necessarily gone for good, it’s definitely transitioning into a more modern style. Hallmarks of this home remodeling trend include rustic design elements paired with warm earth tones and raw materials like glass, metal, and concrete.

Dedicated Home Offices and Flex Space

An increase in remote work and distance learning has left homeowners in need of dedicated work from home spaces. While home offices are sure to be at the top of many home remodeling project lists, some homes lack the square footage. Flex spaces allow homeowners to make the most of their existing space by assigning more than one purpose to a room. These multi-purpose areas add functionality and can double for both live/work purposes.

White on White

There’s a reason why the modern white home remains a popular trend year after year. With clean lines and a “light and bright” feel, this timeless home remodeling trend creates an air of sophistication that can’t be beaten. White design elements give small spaces the illusion of being larger and work especially well in areas lacking natural light from windows, such as kitchens. Homeowners can easily take this classic look up a notch with metallic finishes, statement lights, and wood accents.

Blending Indoor and Outdoor Living

Coming off the heels of a year where we spent more time at home than ever before, many homeowners are experiencing cabin fever. The solution? Extending indoor living areas into the great outdoors. We’re talking screened-in porches, patios and decks, outdoor kitchens, and more! Incorporating fireplaces or firepits into outdoor living spaces ensure they can be enjoyed well into the cold season.

There you have it; our favorite home remodeling design trends for 2021! Ready to start planning your next home remodel? We can help! Get in touch to learn more about working with Great Northern Builders.

Rustic Home Exterior Renovation

The exterior of this client’s 1980s home needed some curb appeal, and we were happy to deliver! With plenty of space to pull up a chair and take in the view of their sprawling property, this rustic exterior renovation was exactly what the homeowner envisioned. The reclaimed timber gable truss creates a gorgeous focal point and has local ties; the Douglas Fir beams came from the Old West Publishing building in downtown St. Paul.

Custom Outdoor Sport Court in Highland Park

The Great Northern Builders team has been lucky enough to work with many great clients over the years. We’re always excited when our long-time clients reach out with new project ideas. This garage teardown and rebuild in Highland Park, Minnesota, is no exception — especially because it had a fun twist!

Our team has helped this family with an array of interior and exterior renovation projects in the past. Some of these projects include a new main level addition, kitchen remodel, new windows and siding, a basement remodel, and bathroom remodels. The owners have been so great to work with, and we were thrilled when they contacted us about this new project! In addition to tearing down their existing garage and rebuilding, they wanted to add an attached outdoor sport court.

Both the homeowners and our team couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out! The new sport court spans 22 x 38 feet with custom rebound netting on three sides. The fourth side of the court butts up to the garage and features a custom-built rebound wall. The wall will soon feature custom decals and graphics, which will pair nicely with the court’s specially-licensed MN United banners.

Remodeling Q&A: Frequently Asked Questions

As people spend more time at home in 2020, remodeling has become more popular than ever right now. If you’re considering remodeling, you might be wondering, is it a good time to start a project?

Our short answer: yes! Home financing rates are at an all-time low; it’s a great time to invest in your home. From offices to play spaces to workout rooms to areas for virtual schooling, there are countless ways to make your home work better for you!

To help demystify the process, we’re answering our most common client remodeling questions below. Want to learn more about renovating with our team? We’d love to chat!

Question 1: How long will my project take?
Answer: On average, after the design and permitting phase is complete, bathroom remodels take between 4-8 weeks, and kitchen construction typically lasts from 10-12 weeks. Please keep in mind, project length is also based on material availability.

Question 2: How soon can you start my remodel?
Answer: The timing of your specific remodel all depends on the design process and permitting approval. Once we’ve dug in and started planning, then we can give you an informed, tentative project timeline!

Question 3: I’m ready to go; what’s the next step?
Answer: If you’re ready to get started, then get in touch with us ASAP. The influx of demand caused by COVID has slowed down the remodeling process, and many needed products (such as windows and siding) are on backorder right now. Give yourself enough time to plan your project and reach out to us sooner rather than later!

Modern Kitchen Remodel in Inver Grove Heights

WhiteKitchenRemodel (10)

There’s nothing like being stuck inside for weeks on end to make you realize what your home is lacking. For these homeowners in Inver Grove Heights, it was an updated, functional kitchen. Originally built in 1957, the room had been updated once before, and had the 90s look to prove it! (Think soffits above the cabinets, laminate countertops, and a mundane 12×12 floor tiles.) These clients wanted to work with a design-build firm that could fulfill their need for more storage and functionality without sacrificing style.

The existing kitchen layout was rather small, so we had to get creative when it came to design. To increase the square footage, we borrowed space from the master bedroom closet that backed up to the kitchen, which we converted into a pantry. This minor change had a huge impact and gave the homeowners some much-needed storage! The pantry can be easily accessed by an eye-catching sliding barn door purchased from Artisan Hardware.

Once the project was underway, the homeowners also decided to remove a knee-high wall, replacing it with an open decorative railing on the lower level staircase. The open railing helped make the space feel larger while adding another decorative element.

The new layout features custom Dura Supreme cabinetry topped with natural Quartzite countertops. In addition to under cabinet lighting, we added dimmable lights throughout the room. When it came to plumbing fixtures, no expense was spared! From the fire clay farmhouse sink to the pot filler over the stove, each piece perfectly complements the other. Tying the entire home together is new flooring throughout the main level, which matches the engineered hickory hardwood in the kitchen.

We had so much fun helping these homeowners reimagine their kitchen, and the result is stunning! Want to see more of this gorgeous transformation? You’re in luck! Scroll below for a look inside, and be sure to get in touch with our team to discuss your own remodeling project!
